Highlights from the Week
Toy Drive for Mary's Place
We exceeded our goal for the Toy Drive to support Mary's Place! Thanks to your generosity, over 50 kids in the area will receive a Christmas gift this year.
 
Real World: Independent Work Trackers
Mary Kate Barton visited the 11th and 12th-grade Real World class to present on the benefits of (and science behind) student-driven assignment and task tracking in both the academic and real-world settings. Students, especially those who have some experience taking college courses over the summer, were quick to echo much of the information presented and endorse the utility of these tools as a boon to students. They finished out the period working with MK and Char to explore and “test drive” a handful of templates to find one that fits best.
Field Trip to the Opera
Our high schoolers traveled to South Lake Union to tour the Seattle Opera facilities. We explored the marvelous maze of handmade costumes, as well as where the sets are built and where the professional opera singers rehearse. They had lots of fun touring and learning about theater magic!

Winter Break




Trillium Academy will be on Winter Break from Saturday, December 20, through Monday, January 5. January 5 is an in-service day for our staffulty, and there will be no school that day.




The first day back for students is Tuesday, January 6.

Inclement Weather Policy




As we start to experience winter weather, we wanted to share a few highlights from our Inclement Weather and Emergency Closures policy, found in our handbook.




Trillium Academy will be open as usual unless there is an announcement of closure or delay. In most cases, Trillium Academy will follow the emergency closure and delay schedule for Seattle Public Schools. For example, Trillium Academy will also be canceled if Seattle Public Schools are canceled. If Seattle Public Schools have a two-hour late start, Trillium Academy will also have a two-hour late start. We will send notifications of closures and delays via email, text, and website banners.

Design, Innovation, and Society (ages 10-18)
Wednesdays, January 14 through March 18, from 3:00 - 4:15 pm
This is a space for students to engage with the design process by creating human-centered solutions. These solutions will address real world and everyday challenges by utilizing creativity, empathy, inclusivity and perspective taking. In this group the students become inventors and change-makers while facilitators provide the necessary materials, skills, or perspective needed to bring their ideas to fruition. They’ll explore the various stages of the design process including brainstorming, team building, ideation, prototyping, testing/feedback, iteration and final deliverables!


All forms of designers and inventors are welcome here, from those interested in product or web design all the way to curriculum and systems design! Students will learn the technical skills needed to excel within engineering and design professional fields alongside an understanding of the moral and ethical dilemmas that go hand-in-hand with innovation

Sunday Chess Club

This winter, Chess Club with Coach Leo returns. This is an opportunity for students to learn about the game while developing skills and strategies, and connect with their peers. Chess Club is open to students in grades 5-12 from other area schools.




Taught by Dr. Leo Stefurak, Chess Club will meet on Sunday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:00 pm. In Kate’s Middle School Science B class, students discuss warning signs of natural disasters, how to prepare for them, and the injustices that exist in disaster response. They've examined real-world data, including FEMA’s National Risk Index maps, to understand Seattle’s risk levels for different types of natural disasters.
