Introducing Trillium's High School Biology Teacher




Mari Johnson has joined our team as a long-term sub to fill the open Biology position. She recently received her PhD in Immunology, Infection, and Translation Medicine and is a Postdoctoral Scientist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. She enjoys designing innovative, student-centered lessons that support neurodiverse learners by fostering inclusive classroom environments and making complex biological concepts accessible and relevant through real-world applications.




We enjoyed Nicole Patel and appreciated her willingness to step in, but she wasn't able to take on a full-time load at Trillium, and we needed full-time support. We are excited to have Mari on board!
 
A School Operations Assistant joins Trillium




Cam is excited to join Trillium Academy as the School Operations Assistant! He has previously worked in education in several capacities, such as teaching English/Humanities with middle school and high school classes, organizing events, writing communications, and providing administrative support.




Cam’s interests in reading, discovering, and talking about books led him to start a bookselling business a few years ago, which included opening and running a brick-and-mortar bookstore in Seattle for a couple of years.




He’s also a musician—playing drums, singing, and writing songs. He plays in two bands, one of which recently finished their first tour outside of the U.S. They had the opportunity to play shows in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, and the UK, which was a fantastic experience.




Cam is looking forward to being a part of the team at Trillium Academy—supporting the school, the community, and the meaningful learning happening!

Sunday Chess Club

This winter, Chess Club with Coach Leo returns. This is an opportunity for students to learn about the game while developing skills and strategies, and connect with their peers. Chess Club is open to students in grades 5-12 from other area schools.




Taught by Dr. Leo Stefurak, Chess Club will meet on Sunday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:00 pm. Design, Innovation, and Society (ages 10-18)
Wednesdays, January 14 through March 18, from 3:00 - 4:15 pm
This is a space for students to engage with the design process by creating human-centered solutions. These solutions will address real world and everyday challenges by utilizing creativity, empathy, inclusivity and perspective taking. In this group the students become inventors and change-makers while facilitators provide the necessary materials, skills, or perspective needed to bring their ideas to fruition. They’ll explore the various stages of the design process including brainstorming, team building, ideation, prototyping, testing/feedback, iteration and final deliverables! Yet for neurodivergent kids — bright, anxious, autistic, ADHD, or learning-different — friendship can feel difficult, especially when social intuition doesn't come naturally. The good news? Every child can find at least “one friend and a spare” when they know how. In this practical and heart-centered session, join Debbie Steinberg Kuntz, licensed family therapist and founder of Bright & Quirky, to learn what healthy friendship looks like for uniquely wired kids and how to align your expectations with their real social needs. We’ll explore:

* When (and how much) to step in and assist
* Whether online friendships “count”
* What truly works in friendship skill-building
* How to create the psychological safety that helps kids connect
