Classroom Highlights

Middle School
In Kate’s Middle School Science B class, students discussed warning signs of natural disasters, how to prepare for them, and the injustices that exist in disaster response. Each day, they examined real-world data, including FEMA’s National Risk Index maps, to understand Seattle’s risk levels for different types of natural disasters. They also investigated which specific buildings and neighborhoods face heightened vulnerability, such as older unreinforced masonry structures.
Throughout the lesson, the class explored the systemic failures of the Hurricane Katrina response. Kate used this example to help students understand that natural disasters do not impact all communities equally.
To wrap up the unit, students began creating personal emergency plans for an earthquake. They focused on memorizing emergency and family phone numbers, identifying nearby places they can go for help, and recognizing potential hazards along their routes to and from school.

High School
JoeAnna’s Precalculus class is currently studying polar graphing. Unlike a typical x-y coordinate graph, a polar graph is a two-dimensional system where each point is defined by its distance from a central point (the pole) and its angle from a reference ray (the polar axis). After working with circles, lines, shifted circles, and cardioids, the class moved on to graphing looped limaçons.

Helping Neurodivergent Kids Make and Keep Friends: Aligning Expectations, Easing Struggles, and Finding Their People
Tuesday, December 9
7:00 - 8:00 pm
Friendship isn’t a luxury — it’s a lifeline. Research shows that social connection is one of the strongest predictors of a happy, fulfilling life. Yet for neurodivergent kids — bright, anxious, autistic, ADHD, or learning-different — friendship can feel difficult, especially when social intuition doesn't come naturally. The good news? Every child can find at least “one friend and a spare” when they know how. In this practical and heart-centered session, join Debbie Steinberg Kuntz, licensed family therapist and founder of Bright & Quirky, to learn what healthy friendship looks like for uniquely wired kids and how to align your expectations with their real social needs. We’ll explore:
* How to help your child meet friends through strengths and passions
* When (and how much) to step in and assist
* Whether online friendships “count”
* What truly works in friendship skill-building
* How to create the psychological safety that helps kids connect
* How social struggles look different in gifted, ADHD, autistic, and anxious kids
* How to ease social anxiety and rejection sensitivity with compassion
You’ll leave with a calmer heart, realistic expectations, and new ways to help your child (and yourself) find genuine connection — one friend at a time.
