On Monday, January 26, we will have three new students joining our middle school for semester two! Please welcome new 5th graders, Fern and her mother, Skylar Brett, and Max Schulze and his parents, Jeremy Schulze and Kaitlyn Marx; and welcome a new 8th grader, Cornelius Sachs, and his parents, Liz and Matthew Sachs.

Upcoming No School Dates
There will be no school on Monday, January 19, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and Friday, January 23, for an end-of-quarter grading day.
Seattle Traffic Update
This weekend, the Seattle Department of Transportation started planned construction on northbound I-5 for major preservation and repairs. Through June 8, the mainline northbound freeway will be reduced to the two right lanes from north of Mercer Street to Northeast 45th Street. Throughout the lane restrictions, the express lanes will run northbound only 24 hours a day. Those traveling south of the work zone may also be affected as the express lanes will not reverse as usual. Highlights from the Classroom
Middle School Humanities
Students in Leslie and Ashley's humanities class are deep into worldbuilding, creating social contracts, and problem-solving mysterious invasions of land. They have created a world map showcasing their creative and adventurous spirits.
High School Biology
High school biology students dissolved onion root tips in acid, applying a stain to view mitosis (cell division) under the microscope. Students will visit NAAM, located in the Central District. Current exhibits include Selma is Now: The March for Justice Continues and Freedom of Expression, which features a variety of Black artists.
Washington State History Museum, January 29
Middle school students will travel to Tacoma for the "Dressing in the Gilded Age" exhibit. More details will be shared via Toddle.
High School

Sunday Chess Club
January 25; February 1, 8; March 1, 8, 15, 29
This is an opportunity for students to learn about the game while developing skills and strategies, and connect with their peers. Chess Club is open to students in grades 5-12 from other area schools.
Taught by Dr. Leo Stefurak, Chess Club will meet on Sunday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:00 pm. Parenting Gifted and 2e Youth Navigating Mental Health Challenges
January 26 through March 9, from 5:30 to 6:45 pm
This Community Group through SENG is geared towards parents of gifted and twice-exceptional children and is designed specifically to address some of the unique issues, needs, and challenges faced by these children. This group will cover topics like how to look out for common mental health challenges in the gifted population and how to deal with family and friends who don't understand your child's giftedness or twice-exceptionality.
