High School Real World

Real World is a daily class where high schoolers develop the skills needed for both academic success and whole-child growth. A passion-based element allows students to practice those skills within a personal interest area.

Teachers equip students with practice resources and tools — such as homework trackers and writing support — to strengthen their executive functioning (EF), helping to sustain motivation, practice follow-through, and build confidence. Within smaller, developmentally appropriate grade-grouped settings (9th & 10th grades paired together, and 11th & 12th grades paired together), teachers also support students in developing social maturity and emotional regulation through discussion and social-emotional learning (SEL).

Outside Speakers & Off-Campus Opportunities

A significant focus of the Real World programming is planning for post-secondary life and independent living. Students have explored how to find, apply for, and furnish an apartment.  They have also practiced interviewing for jobs and participated in a range of volunteer activities. We prioritize experiences that strengthen resumes and college applications, while also introducing students to pathways and opportunities they might not otherwise consider.

We regularly welcome outside speakers to broaden students’ perspectives and connect them with subject-matter experts. Trillium alumni have returned to share firsthand experiences with summer transition programs, gap year programs, college applications, and moving away from home. Additional speakers have covered topics including financial literacy, neurodivergent-friendly hiring practices, and navigating friendships and relationships.
