Our 2e Students
A twice-exceptional or “2e” student refers to an individual who is intellectually gifted (such as having a high IQ) and also has a specific learning difference like dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD and/or ASD.
Trillium Academy’s definition of gifted does not rely on a specific IQ score, but rather a broad range of areas where a student has demonstrated exceptional talent and aptitude. A characteristic that defines our 2e students is a deep passion for learning but a challenge with having that need met in a traditional school setting.
Reflecting upon the IQ curve (recognizing that there are inherent limitations to the test), only about 5% of the population will have scores somewhere beyond the first two standard deviations away from the norm on either side of the IQ curve. If you have received a neuropsychological testing report for your child, you may have learned that they are on both sides of the curve in different areas. These students possess exceptional abilities alongside challenges that can sometimes mask their giftedness in traditional educational settings.
On a very practical level, this means that 2e students are unique and essentially rare. They are unusual, extraordinary, complex, awe-inspiring, intense, deep, full of potential, and in need of support.
